Explanation of Snow Dew Phenomenon in Indonesian Mountains

We often see photos on social media where hikers showcase how cold the temperature is while holding snow, or more precisely, frost crystals. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as snow dew, while the Dieng community often calls it ‘embun upas’ or death dew.

Why is it called “death dew”? This is because when this phenomenon occurs, plants (especially potatoes) that are touched by this dew will wither and die, causing significant losses for farmers.

The phenomenon of snow dew in the mountains of Indonesia occurs during the dry season, typically around the months of June to August, and it usually appears in areas with elevations above 2000 meters above sea level (mdpl).

So, it can be ensured that if you’re an adventurer climbing mountains (with elevations exceeding 2000 meters above sea level) during June to August, you will likely encounter this phenomenon where frost or snow dew typically adheres to the surface of tents and the leaves of plants in the vicinity.

How Does Snow Dew Occur?

In general, the cold temperature conditions leading to the occurrence of snow dew are a result of the influx of cold and dry air masses from the Australian continent, known as the cold monsoon flow.

Climatologically, this Australian cold monsoon is active during the months of June, July, and August, which coincide with the peak of summer for regions in Indonesia located south of the equator.

The influx of cold and dry air from Australia causes the air conditions in June and July to be relatively cooler, especially during the night, and this effect is more pronounced in highland or mountainous areas.

During the dry season when the weather is clear and not cloudy, the heat from the Earth radiates into the atmosphere more effectively at night, causing the surface temperature to become lower and cooler than usual.

What are the Dangers of Snow Dew for Humans?

Although the impact of snow dew is primarily harmful to plants as it can cause them to wither, it can also pose dangers to humans. If you happen to be in an area where snow dew occurs, you should exercise caution when handling it.

The dew that crystallizes into ice can be quite sharp and may cause discomfort when it comes into direct contact with the palm.

Furthermore, the air temperature during the occurrence of snow dew can drop to as low as -8°C. This makes it potentially dangerous for individuals who are not in good physical condition to be outdoors, as they are at risk of hypothermia.
