How You Carry a Bag Reflects Your Personality

How you carry that bag also reflects your personality. For example, when you always sling a bag with a short strap over your shoulder, it shows that you are someone who doesn’t like to be constrained. You want to free your hands from the task of carrying a bag so that you can hold or do other things. The same goes for when you wear a messenger bag with the strap crossing from the left shoulder to the right hip (or vice versa). This style is often adopted by young women.

“The girl who wears a cross-body bag doesn’t mind obscuring her body’s silhouette and her clothes. It’s practical, but it also suggests that you’re a bit tacky,” says Patti Wood, a body language expert and author of the book “Success Signals: A Guide to Reading Body Language.” There’s also a style that, according to Patti’s terminology, is called “I’ve Got A Bag Bitch.” They don’t seem to carry a bag at all, except perhaps their smartphone. That’s because they have an assistant or a significant other willing to carry their bag for them. “When people feel the need to look beautiful all the time, they don’t want to be burdened by anything,” she adds. Basically, according to Patti, there are 10 bag-carrying styles that can describe who you are:

  1. Holding a clutch with both hands. Kate Moss and Kate Middleton are among the women who often do this. They carry their small bags with both hands in front of their bodies. This method shows that they are protective in nature.
  2. Attaching a short-strapped bag to the lower arm, close to the elbow fold. You probably know who is most frequently seen carrying bags like this. Yes, it’s Victoria Beckham. This style appears feminine but also signifies empowerment for the bag carrier. “You carry the bag as if it’s a badge of honor. You feel like you have superiority,” says Patti.
  3. Slinging a bag with a long strap over the shoulder and letting it hang by the side of the body. Taylor Swift is one of the fans of long-strap bags and often displays this style. “This style indicates a woman who lacks awareness. It’s as if she wants to say, ‘I have no power over this world,'” adds Patti.
  4. Carrying a bag like a suitcase. This is typically done when the bag has a short strap, and it’s held from the top. This style is often seen in working women. When carrying a bag like this, they are in a hurry and no longer concerned about their appearance. They are more focused on where they are heading.
  5. Carrying a bag and hugging it to the chest. This is usually done when someone is in a hurry. “The style displayed is more functional. You don’t care about the bag itself but what’s inside it. You are goal-oriented,” she says.
  6. One hand carrying the bag, the other hand holding the phone, while the shoulder is also holding the bag. From the busy appearance, you can tell that this woman is a multitasker. It seems like they want to carry all their items at once. If there are shopping bags, they simply hang them on their elbows. “People like this look tired and are in a rush,” Patti exclaims.
  7. Hooking the thumb through the bag handle. This style indicates a protective attitude towards oneself and their belongings, and always being vigilant. The hand holds the bag with the thumb securely hooked around the handle. Take a look at how Carrie Bradshaw carries her bag in Sex and the City.
  8. Wearing a messenger bag with the strap crossing from the left shoulder to the right hip (or vice versa). This style is usually adopted by young women. “The girl who wears a cross-body bag doesn’t mind obscuring her body’s silhouette and her clothes. It’s practical, but it also suggests that you’re a bit tacky,” says Patti.
  9. Carrying a bag with a short strap over the shoulder. This indicates that you are someone who doesn’t like to be constrained. You want to free your hands from the task of carrying a bag so that you can hold or do other things.
  10. Not seen carrying a bag at all, except perhaps their smartphone. This person carries a bag but has an assistant or a significant other willing to carry their bag for them. They want to look beautiful all the time and prefer not to be bothered with carrying a bag or anything else.
